Biotensegrity

The biological architecture behind every treatment at Muscle Works. Your body isn't a stack of bones — it's a continuous tension network. Dr. Hirschi treats it that way.

Biotensegrity

Biotensegrity is the model of human anatomy that underpins everything Dr. Brent Hirschi does at Muscle Works Chiropractic. It’s the reason a patient with knee pain might get treated at the hip — or why a stubborn shoulder problem finally lets go after Dr. Hirschi works on the opposite ankle. If you’ve ever wondered why your pain keeps moving, biotensegrity is the answer.

What Biotensegrity Actually Means

Traditional anatomy textbooks draw the body like a stack of bricks — femur on tibia, vertebra on vertebra, head balanced on top. That model is convenient, but it’s wrong. Bones don’t actually touch each other under load. They float inside a continuous web of muscles, fascia, ligaments, and connective tissue that holds them in precise relationships through balanced tension.

That’s biotensegrity: bio (living) + tensegrity (tension + integrity). The same architecture that lets a geodesic dome stand without internal supports is the architecture that keeps you upright, moving, and pain-free. Pull on one cable and the whole structure shifts.

Biotensegrity model — the body as a tension network

Why It Changes How You’re Treated

When you accept that the body is a continuous tension network rather than a stack of independent parts, three things follow:

  1. Pain rarely lives where it shows up. A tight hamstring is often the loudest part of a pattern that started at the foot, the opposite hip, or even the jaw. Treating the loud part feels good for a day. Treating the source resolves it.
  2. Posture is a global problem. You can’t fix forward-head posture by stretching your neck — the whole tension lattice has to rebalance. That’s why corrective work at Muscle Works is full-body, not local.
  3. Compensations are smart, not stupid. Your body adapts to a weak link by tightening somewhere else. Those compensations are protecting you. Dr. Hirschi’s job is to remove the underlying cause so the protective tension can let go on its own.

How Biotensegrity Shapes a Visit

Every assessment at Muscle Works starts global before it goes local. Dr. Hirschi watches how you move from across the room — how you stand, how you walk, how you load each side. He tests muscles up and down the chain to find the original weak link, not just the tight spot you came in for. Then he reactivates the shut-down muscles using Muscle Therapy, releases over-tightened fascia, and uses gentle adjustments to nudge the structure back into balance.

The result is care that addresses the whole tension system — which is why patients often report that other complaints (a clicking jaw, an old hip ache, headaches that come and go) quietly resolve alongside the one that brought them in.

Who Benefits Most From a Biotensegrity-Based Approach

If you’ve been chasing pain from one body part to another, if you’ve had treatment that only helps for a few days, or if you’ve been told “everything looks fine on the imaging” but you still hurt — biotensegrity is probably the missing frame. The same goes for athletes recovering from injury, post-surgical patients rebuilding a movement pattern, and anyone whose pain doesn’t fit the textbook diagnosis.

Dr. Hirschi has spent over fifteen years refining a biotensegrity-informed practice in Coeur d’Alene. Whether you’ve been everywhere else or you’re just starting, this is a different conversation about your body — one that finally explains why what you’ve tried hasn’t worked, and what to do about it.
